Villages, Traditions and Festivities

To truly experience the spirit of Sulcis and authentic Sardinia

In this territory, festivals still follow the rhythm of the seasons and local life. Food festivals often arise around a dish or a product, becoming simple and highly participatory occasions, while religious commemorations and historical events bring ancient traditions back to the streets.

The most direct and exciting way to truly enter into the spirit of the place.

Pilau Festival

Calasetta

Calasetta’s Pilau is a traditional Tabarchino dish, prepared with fregola and seafood, particularly spider crab, linked to a gastronomic culture that weaves together Ligurian, Tunisian and Sardinian roots. The festival program, which takes place in May and marks the opening of the season, includes show cooking, workshops, concerts and other cultural events.

Girotonno

Carloforte

Girotonno is generally held between late May and early June and is the best-known event dedicated to tuna culture in Carloforte. At the center are the international Tuna Competition, live cooking, tastings at the Tuna Food Village and concerts, within a festival born from the fascinating history of bluefin tuna on the island of San Pietro.

Feast of Sant'Antioco Martire

Sant'Antioco

The feast dedicated to Sant’Antioco, patron saint of Sardinia, is celebrated primarily twice a year: with Sa Festa Manna, fifteen days after Easter, and with the summer edition in August. The days combine religious celebrations, processions, folk groups, horsemen and festive moments in the squares, maintaining a very strong balance between devotion and popular participation.

Calici in Tonnara

Portoscuso

Calici in Tonnara usually takes place in early July among the ancient ruins of the Su Pranu tonnara. It’s a festival dedicated to Sardinian wine, with over 40 producers and features tastings and cultural initiatives, including guided tours of the tonnara facilities and the village. An experience that is much more than a simple tasting, but a true immersion in flavors and traditions.

Old Tratalias

The Ghost Village

Old Tratalias is a small uninhabited village, where the square, stone houses and open spaces define an orderly whole, to be explored at leisure. Abandoned in the 1970s after the construction of the Monte Pranu dam, today it has been partially restored: next to the church a small museum tells the story of the place, while some buildings host exhibitions and displays about village life.

Buggerru

The Ancient Mining Village

Buggerru was born as a mining village and still preserves its traces today, among structures, the harbor and routes linked to mining activity. It sits on one of the most scenic stretches of the western coast, where the Malfidano channel meets the sea, with houses arranged in a fan along the valley slopes. Around it rise imposing cliffs, in a landscape where nature and industrial memory remain closely intertwined.

Medieval Procession

Iglesias

The Medieval Procession of Iglesias takes place in August, traditionally on the 13th, as part of the Medieval Summer of Iglesias program. Participants and historical groups cross the city center in costume and restore to the city an important part of its urban memory. A reenactment that links civic identity, history and public space.
